Google Header Part 2 How to Skyrocket your Local SEO with Google+ Part 1.

Although Google+ is already a couple years old now, it is still one of the most misunderstood social media networks available. One of greatest assets of Google+ is its ability to increase your Local SEO ranking and visibility in Google SERP’s. Large enterprises aren’t the only ones jumping on the Google+ bandwagon to increase their local rankings. Small independent businesses are also starting to reap the benefits of this social media secret. This two-part tutorial goes over how to optimize your Google+ Business page (Part 1) and your Google+ Local page (Part 2).

Google+ Business Optimization

- SEO Title -

The SEO title is the name of your business with “ – Google +” added on the end

Example: Powered by Search – Google+

- URL -

Google+ use to have really long confusing URL’s and have finally introduced custom URL’s that are shorter. If you haven’t converted over to the new URL format already, I highly advise it.

Old URL:

https://plus.google.com/111615827851165278835

New URL:

https://plus.google.com/+Poweredbysearch

New URL Tutorial:

  1. Go to your Google+ Business profile “About” page
  2. Scroll down to the “Links” section
  3. It will show your old Google+ URL and below will ask if you would like to switch to the new personalized URL.
  4. Select the personalized URL you would like

- Meta Description -

The meta description for your Google+ Business profile is only 160 characters long and will consist of your “Tagline” and the first sentence or two of your “Introduction.” Below I have highlighted the Tagline and Introduction in yellow on our Google+ Business profile as well have provided an example of how you can expect your meta description to look like in Google’s SERP’s.

- Dofollow Links -

Google+ is also a fantastic and super easy way to obtain dofollow links. In the past all links on Google+ were dofollow, but now only links in your “Introduction” and links to other websites are. Although only links in your introduction are of any use you can still take full advantage of it as highlighted in blue below.

- Verify Business Email & Website -

Verifying your businesses email and website on Google+ is vital as it generates a sense of authority for your users and make’s your business look more legitimate in the eye’s of search engines. Once you see a little grey check mark like the one shown below next to your email and website you will know your verified.

- Creating your Circles -

One of the coolest features of Google+ is the circles feature. No other popular social network has a feature quite like circles that allows users to organize people and businesses into categories. When you first sign up for Google+ you are provided with generic circles (Following, Customers, VIPs, Team Members) like the example below.

In order to make these circles more “search friendly” re-name them and add new one’s that are more targeted towards your business and buyer personas. Creating custom circles is a fantastic branding opportunity as it attracts influences and businesses around a certain topic.

For example, if you are a real estate agent you might want to create circles such as:

  • Clients
  • Competitors
  • Colleagues
  • Marketing
  • Interior Designers
  • Mortgage Brokers
  • Lawyers
  • Home Inspectors
  • Contractors

- Posting on Google+ -

Headlines:

Like any article you need to have a capturing headline that makes readers want to read more, same thing goes for social media posts. The first sentence in any post automatically becomes the “title tag” on Google+. In order to maximize your click through rate and the viralocity of your post an eye-catching headline is key. I recommend reading How to Write Magnetic Headlines by Brian Clack. The second and third sentence in your post (anything under 160 characters) will consist of your meta description. This is where you need to make sure you are adding specific keywords that highlight what your post entails.

Photos / Videos:

These days a picture is worth a 1000 shares. Content is still king, but vibrant visuals to attract the eye of someone browsing will immediately make them want to read your headline. Once someone has clicked on your post and begins to read your content you still want to add visuals or videos or both to keep your viewers intrigued.

Articles with images get 94% more views than those without. (MDG)

Link:

Google also offers a link feature when you go to post anything. Many people don’t think anything of the link feature, however anyone in the SEO world knows that “dofollow” links are gold. Remember, whenever your posting any link don’t just paste the URL in the “text” field. Always remember to use the Google+ link feature. The image below indicates where the “Link” feature is on Google+.

Sharing:

Another really cool feature Google+ has implemented is the ability to share to selected people or selected circles. For example if I was a real-estate agent and wanted to share a blog post about “10 Ways To Stage Your House Before You Sell It” I can choose the option of only sharing this post to people in my “Interior Designers” circle. This way I am not spamming other people’s news feed with content that doesn’t relate to them and I am only targeting a specific group of people that would be interested in the topic choice of the post. The image below shows how to select specific people or circles to share your content to.
